How Roll Forming Machines Work

 

What is a roll forming machine?

A roll forming machine commonly known as metal forming machine makes some specific configurations out of long stripes of metal, mostly coiled steel. To bend the metal as necessary, the required cross-section profile of the piece is specifically designed for the machine. Apart from roll forming, these machines perform several metalworking duties that include material cutting and roll punching.

For the most part, roll forming machines, work in a continuous cycle. The material is inserted in the machine where it makes its way through the stages of each operation, ending with the formation of final product.

How a roll forming machine works

A metal is bended at the room temperature in roll forming machine using number of stations where fixed rollers guide the metal and make necessary bends. Each set of rollers bend the metal more than the previous station, as the strip of the metal travels through the roll forming machine.

This enhanced method of bending the metal ensures that the correct cross-sectional configuration is achieved while maintaining cross-sectional area of the work piece. Roll forming machines become a good choice for manufacturing large quantities or very long pieces as the operating speed is between 30 to 600 feet per minute.
